The West Michigan Whitecaps won their 10th straight game Friday, a 2-1 victory over the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field in South Bend, IN, and extended the longest active winning-streak in the minor leagues.
Will Maddox scored in the fourth inning for the Whitecaps when Will Allen knocked him in, giving the team a 1-0 lead. Jose Zambrano would plate another run for West Michigan in the seventh. Zambrano’s sacrifice fly would be the deciding factor as the Cubs scored a run in the bottom of the frame to get back within one run.
Beau Burrows (4-3) earned the victory, giving up one hit and one walk. His ERA is now a stellar 2.07. Toller Boardman pitched out of a jam in the eighth and Gerson Moreno tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his ninth save.
The victory moves the Whitecaps 13 games over .500 at 32-19. They’ll try to make it 11 straight on Saturday in South Bend when Kyle Dowdy takes the mound at 6pm.
The ‘Caps and Cubs will play a shortened doubleheader to make up a game from April 10th. Fernando Perez will get the start in the second game.
