Admirals sink Griffins 3-1 to spoil Jurco’s return

Wednesday night in Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Admirals spoiled the return of Tomas Jurco and defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-1 at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena behind Trevor Smith’s two goals.

The 23-year-old Jurco was assigned by the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday to the Griffins (9-6-0-0) for conditioning work. Jurco, who had not played this season for the Wings, scored in his season debut for GR. But, Juuse Saros saved 28 shots and collected his AHL-leading ninth win as the Admirals (11-2-1-1) extended their point streak to nine games, good enough to lead the Central Division.
In the opening period, Smith smoked a shot past GR goalie Jared Coreau at the 4:20 mark off a blazing pass from the left by Matt White, which sparked the Admirals attack. It was Smith again, at 7:57 of the second period, who would snap the Griffins’ streak of 28 consecutive penalty kills (since Oct. 29 vs. Charlotte) when he put home a rebound off Kevin Fiala’s wrist shot from the right side. Vladislav Kamenev another power-play goal at 7:33 into the third.

Jurco scored on a 5-on-3 power play in the final period, rebounding Robbie Russo’s one-timer into an open net with 4:31 remaining. Grand Rapids converted only 1-of-6 power-play opportunities. Coreau stopped 23 of 26 shots.
