Ivan Barbashev scored two goals Saturday night, spoiling Jared Coreau’s 25th birthday and the 100th goal of Ben Street’s AHL career, as the Chicago Wolves downed the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-2 at Van Andel Arena.
Not having won in Grand Rapids for nearly two years, the almost full-house crowd watched Wolves take and lose a 2-0 lead to GR, then quickly regain the lead again and hold off the heavy home favorites for the win.
Rookie Samuel Blais scored his first pro goal in the opening period, beating Griffins goaltender Coreau with a backhand shot at the 12:21 mark. Only 4:19 later, Barbashev scored his first goal on the night, finishing a pass from behind the net to give the Wolves a 2-0 advantage.
Street’s 100th AHL goal came at 13:44 of the second period when he took a Robbie Russo pass and clubbed it home into the wide open net of Chicago goalie Jordan Bennington.
Tyler Bertuzzi showed up at he front of the net and crashed the party in the third period. His rebound with just over eight minutes remaining lit the lamp and tied the game at deuces. But, Barbashev stopped the presses with a snapshot from out front that beat Coreau for the 3-2 lead just 31 seconds later.
Grand Rapids found themselves in chaos mode late with Coreau heading to the bench in favor of the extra attacker and Anthony Mantha blowing a tire, giving former Griffins forward Landon Ferraro a clear path to an empty net with less than a minute to go in regulation.
The loss moves the Griffins to 5-4-0-0 on the season, still without a regulation tie/overtime game.
Coreau stopped 31 total shots to Binnington’s 34 in veteran AHL linesman Kevin Hall’s final game on the ice. Both teams celebrated with Hall in the handshake line after the game.
