The West Michigan Whitecaps took home a tough 2-1 win Sunday at Parkview Field over the Fort Wayne Tin Caps.
Fort Wayne took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI-single by yesterday’s hero, Carlos Belen, and held it until the seventh inning when West Michigan SS Leo Laffita tied the ballgame with a sacrifice fly that scored catcher Shane Zeile.
In the top of the eighth, Whitecaps leader Will Maddox lined out to Tin Caps’ CF Michael Gettys, who seemed to have thrown out West Michigan’s Cam Gibson at home plate after he tagged up at third base, but the ball came loose on Gibson’s slide through Tin Caps’ catcher Kyle Overstreet‘s glove giving the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead.
Gerson Moreno sewed up the end of the game for West Michigan, earning his team-best sixth save of the year. Toller Boardman (3-3) got the win in middle relief duty.
These teams will play the finale of this four-game series on Monday, with Sandy Baez on the mound for West Michigan at 7:05pm.
