James Forrest footed a ball past the goalkeeper in the 83rd minute as Celtic FC found their way to the Belfred Cup semifinals with a 2-0 win over Alloa Athletic on Wednesday.
Oh, how the Hoops fans must have felt as the first half came to conclusion with the teams still locked in a scoreless tie. The Celtic front line were getting shots on goal but firing wide, high and violently erratic. M Tomas Rogic and LB Kieran Tierney both had shots blocked by the goalkeeper and Moussa Dembele, who would score in the 90th minute, was stoned at the goal late in the first half by Neil Parry.
It seemed as if Hoops goalkeeper Craig Gordon felt the anxiousness of the home crowd at Parkhead when he took an undisciplined yellow card, sending his foot high to the midsection of Greig Spence just outside the goal box. Most analysts thought it was worthy of a red card.
Forrest would need three strikes to beat Parry late in the game, but his persistence paid off.
Coming off the disappointing draw with Inverness CT, Celtic and boss Brendan Rodgers play again Saturday when they host Kilmarnock at Celtic Park in Ladbrokes’ Premiership play. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.
