It’s been eight long years since the Grand Rapids Griffins have started a season this hot.
Jared Coreau stopped 37 shots and Tyler Bertuzzi added a goal and assist in the Griffins’ 3-2 win over the Cleveland Monsters Saturday night at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI.
Ben Street scored his first goal as a Griffin, netting the puck at the 13:02 mark of the second period to put GR on top. Late in the period, Street stole a clearing pass in the Monsters zone, found Eric Tangradi for a wrist shot from the left circle and saw Bertuzzi put in the rebound for a 2-0 Griffins lead only 24 seconds before the second intermission.
Robbie Russo opened the third period with a goal from the right circle after Bertuzzi set him up in the first minute of the third period.
Coreau allowed two goals to the Monsters in the third, but the Griffins held tough and got a bit of revenge for the 4-2 series loss last spring in the Calder Cup playoffs. Coreau (4-1) has made every start in net for the Griffins this season, his fifth consecutive start is the second-best in franchise history to open a season.
- GR Bertuzzi (goal, two assists)
- CLE Broadhurst (two goals)
- GR Street (goal, assist)
The Griffins head out on the road to face the Charlotte Checkers next weekend with games on both Friday and Saturday night.
