Dahntay Jones waived by Cavaliers

Dahntay Jones, the former Grand Rapids Drive forward who won an NBA Championship this past season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, was waived. The team announced the move on Saturday.

Jones made headlines when he scored five straight points late in a Game 6 win of the NBA Finals.

The veteran swingman, who played for Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University, was waived because his salary was about to become guaranteed at $1.6 million for the 2016-17 season. Sources hinted to ESPN’s Marc Stein that Jones may return if not picked up on waivers.

Another option is a return to Grand Rapids. But with former coach Otis Smith now on Stan Van Gundy‘s bench in Detroit, the relationship with new coach Rex Walters and the front office may not be familiar enough to draw Jones back to Beer City. Jones holds the Drive team-record for most points in a game with 45.
