Dowdy dazzles, Whitecaps win 1-0

Kyle Dowdy got his first start on the mound and the West Michigan Whitecaps beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.

5,549 fans watched the right-handed former reliever hurl four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Jon Maciel jumped on the mound after that and pitched two scoreless innings. In the seventh, shortstop Leo Laffita doubled home Jose Azocar to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 lead.

Jake Shull (1-0) got the victory after throwing a couple of scoreless innings to hold the lead. Gerson Moreno earned his fifth save of the season.

The Whitecaps improve to 18-16.
