The Iowa Energy spoiled the return to Beer City for Detroit Pistons’ assignees Henry Ellenson and Michael Gbinije as they beat the Grand Rapids Drive in a 99-91 win at the DeltaPlex Arena during Super Heroes Night on Wednesday.
Nine players scored in double figures for the Energy, including Wayne Selden (26 points) and Memphis Grizzlies’ assignee Wade Baldwin (22 points). Former Michigan State forward Matt Costello added 12 points and 11 rebounds and was cheered on heavily by the MSU-friendly crowd, although former Spartan guard Kalin Lucas did not receive the same admiration.
Recent Drive acquisition Kevin Murphy led the way for Grand Rapids with 23 points off the bench. Ray McCallum continued to impress the scouts with his 20 points and six assists. Jordan Crawford struggled (5-for-21) to find 15 points.
After starting the game on a 14-4 run, the Energy allowed the Drive to take a seven point lead into halftime. After the half they pulled away, outscoring the Drive 33-14 in the third quarter. The 14 points in the third was a Drive franchise-low for points in a quarter.
Ellenson played 39 minutes, scoring 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting and grabbed 16 rebounds. Gbinije added 10 points and 8 rebounds in 37 minutes while also shooting 4-of-13 from the field.
