First, there was a wailing. Followed by the wailing.
Lionel Messi scored in the third minute to begin his hat trick and FC Barcelona controlled the match from beginning to end as they beat Celtic FC 7-0 in Champions League play on Tuesday.
Coming off a convincing 4-1 victory over Rangers Saturday in the Scottish Premier League, Celtic had looked to continue their impressive play under new Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers. But, Messi and Neymar led the charge for the world’s most recognized team and showed the young Celtic squad what Champions League play is all about.
The Celtic fans here in Beer City couldn’t stand the pain after halftime as Barcelona added to their 2-0 lead with five more goals. Pints tipped toward the heavens and were cleaned out with the ferocity of a rabid wolverine lost in the streets of Glasgow, then filled again as quickly as possible as to not miss another Messi miracle on the twilight darkened pitch.
It didn’t last long, the match that is. Without another Celtic FC match on American television in the near future, the satisfaction of knowing our team is better than the last showing will haunt our dreams.
