GR City League Pride Group welcomes Morgan Tuck to “Youth Inspires Hometown” Luncheon

The City League Pride Group will be celebrating the accomplishments of Grand Rapids’ own, Morgan Tuck, the winningest college basketball player in history, when she is a guest speaker on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, 11:30 AM at the first “Youth Inspires Hometown” luncheon, held at the JW Marriott Hotel, 235 Louis St. NW in Grand Rapids.

The 4-time NCAA Champion at UConn and 3rd overall pick of the WNBA draft by the Connecticut Sun, Tuck returns to her native city recognized throughout the world as one of the greatest winners in basketball history.

The luncheon is designed to encourage our youth to strive for greatness in school, in sports and in life. The former All-American, who graduated from UConn’s College of Business Administration, returns to her hometown to talk about teamwork, commitment to excellence, and scholarship.

Her dad played at Ferris State, her sister played at Illinois, so it’s no surprise she was named to the McDonald’s All-American team after a high school career record of 110-9, won gold medals at the FIBA World Championships from 2010-2013.

What was a surprise were the four consecutive National Championships, two undefeated seasons and a 151-5 career record as a part of the UConn Huskies program.

She was drafted 3rd overall by the Connecticut Sun, a fitting choice for the Huskies’ star.

Established in 2012, the City League Pride Group (CLPG) began its efforts with a call to action to the athletes and supporters of the original Grand Rapids City Athletic League. “Give Back to GR’s Youth!” was the simple rallying cry that resulted in their support.

The City League Pride Group is focused on helping our youth further their education, develop strategic partnerships with local community stakeholders, while raising funds for our Continuing Education Scholarship Fund.

Their mission:

“To provide the youth of Grand Rapids with the assistance needed to continue their education after high school and to graduate from college or trade school, through the provision of scholarships, mentoring, tutoring and family supportive services.”

In their first four years, they’ve organized an all-city high school fundraising reunion weekend that includes several sporting events and a gala assisting three students with financial support toward college tuition. CLPG has conducted two food drives and members have been mentors to a number of Grand Rapids youth. This year, the anticipation is mountings they will be awarding two deserving youth with Continuing Education Scholarships.
