Grand Rapids Galaxy wins home opener over Detroit Dodgers

The Grand Rapids Galaxy opened their inaugural home season on Sunday afternoon at the DeltaPlex Arena with an 80-66 win over the visiting Detroit Dodgers.

April Watson led the charge for the Galaxy and Felicia Thomas hit a couple of key three-pointers in the second half as Grand Rapids took the lead and surged ahead in the final minutes.

The day started off with girls from the Grand Rapids Junior League and Girls On The Run performing the national anthem in front of the home crowd before handing the mic back to in-house emcee, DJ Chuck.

Once the ball was tipped, the Galaxy and Dodgers played at a frenetic first quarter pace. The home team held a 17-13 lead after the first ten minutes.

In the second, GR would make a run behind Watson’s inside play and led at the half.

But the third quarter belonged to Detroit. The Dodgers picked up the pressure full court and caught the Galaxy off guard, taking the lead by one-point late in the quarter.

In the fourth, Felicia Thomas found her stroke from behind the arc and keyed the Galaxy’s explosive offensive firepower late in the game as they scored 33 points in the final ten minutes. Detroit had no match on the boards late and found themselves down 14 at the buzzer.

The Galaxy return to the friendly confines of their home arena on June 18th.
