Catching up with Griffins news in July:

During the recent American Hockey League (AHL) Board of Governors’ meetings in Hilton Head Island, SC, the Grand Rapids Griffins‘ front office was honored for the second time for outstanding fan experience at home games. The Griffins were also honored at the leagues’ marketing meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. “Marvel Superhero Night” on March 26 was recognized as the unique ticket sales promotion and/or theme night. The “Media Room Makeover” was named unique sponsorship package.

At the league’s marketing meeting held in Pittsburgh in June, the Griffins were the recipient of a pair of accolades. “Marvel Superhero Night” presented by Marvel Universe Live! and Eikenhout, Inc. held on March 26 earned the unique ticket sales promotion or theme night award, while the Griffins’ “Media Room Makeover” sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance was distinguished as the unique sponsorship package or entitlement.

Peter Van Dame and Tara Boliard, who were number 1 and 2, respectively, in the AHL Western Conference in FSE (full season ticket sales equivalent) sales, earned Personal Achievement Awards, as did Zach Krywyj for 3rd in group sales.

 


When the meetings concluded in Hilton Head, the Board approved the re-alignment of divisions to be in place in the upcoming 2016-17 season. (see bottom of page)

The regular season will begin on Oct. 12, 2016 and conclude Apr. 16, 2017. All teams will play 76 games, with the exception of a 68-game schedule for Bakersfield, Ontario, San Diego, San Jose, Stockton and Tucson.

The top four teams in each division ranked by points percentage (points earned divided by points available) will qualify for the 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Teams will wear light jerseys at home until the Christmas break, and dark jerseys at home after the Christmas break.

Rule 46 (“Fighting”)/Rule 23 (“Game Misconducts”)
Players who enter into a fight prior to, at, or immediately following the drop of the puck for a faceoff will be assessed an automatic game misconduct in addition to other penalties assessed.

Rule 82 (“Icing”)
In addition to not being permitted to make player substitutions, the offending team on an icing violation also may not use its team time-out.

Rule 1.10 (“Ice Cleaning”)
The ice cleaning procedures used during promotional timeouts will also be used prior to overtime during the regular season, replacing the “dry scrape.”


The Detroit Red Wings re-signed goaltender Jared Coreau to a two-year contract.Coreau2

Coreau, 24, appeared in 47 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins during the 2015-16 season. The 6-foot-6, 220-pounder played in three Calder Cup Playoff games, posting a 2-1 record, a 1.89 GAA and a 0.949 save percentage.

Coreau was named the AHL’s Goaltender of the Month for December 2016.


The Red Wings also named Brian Mahoney-Wilson as their goaltending development coach.Brian Mahoney-Wilson Mahoney-Wilson will work with the Grand Rapids Griffins and the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, as well as other Red Wings prospects.

Mahoney-Wilson, 30, spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, helping the Fighting Irish reach the NCAA Tournament with a 19-11-7 record.
