Kyle Criscuolo’s late score added to Anthony Mantha’s franchise record-tying three power play goals as the Grand Rapids Griffins fought back to beat the Iowa Wild 4-3 on Tuesday at Wells Fargo Arena on Des Moines, Iowa.
The Griffins (3-0-0-0) are on a roll to start the season, having won all three games played.
Martha joins Tomas Jurco (11/20/15 vs. San Diego), Teemu Pulkkinen (1/29/15 at Iowa) and Joe Murphy (10/16/01 at Cleveland) as Griffins to score three power play goals in a game.
Former Griffins’ captain and 2013 Calder Cup champion Jeff Hoggan scored first for Iowa (1-2-0-0) when he stole the puck and sent a wrist shot past Grand Rapids goalie Jared Coreau.
Martha leveled the score at 8:29 of the second period with a slapshot past the Wild goalie before Zach Palmquist’s shot beat Coreau to the short side, giving Iowa another lead less than 85 seconds later. Joel Erickson Ek’s one-timer off the right post and in gave Iowa a 3-1 lead 33 seconds before the second intermission.
Nathan Paetsch set up Mantha for a one-timer that brought the Griffins back within a goal 1:28 into the third.
Mantha completed his hat trick with 8:53 to play, as the Griffins erased their two-goal deficit, for his fifth goal in his last three games.
Criscuolo scored his first professional goal with 3:58 remaining in regulation. Conor Allen and Mitch Callahan set up Criscuolo, which proved to be the game-winner.
The Griffins return to Van Andel Arena this weekend for 7 p.m. games against the Rockford IceHogs on Friday, October 22 and Cleveland Monsters on Saturday, October 23.
