Pistons name Rex Walters new head coach of Grand Rapids Drive

In a move that has been speculated for nearly a month by @DLeagueDigest, the Detroit Pistons today announced the new head coach of the Grand Rapids Drive is Rex Walters.

Walters has spent the last eight seasons(2008-2016) as the head coach at the University of San Francisco, compiling a 126-125 record, after coaching the previous two seasons(2006-2008) at Florida Atlantic, where he went 31-33. Walters was named 2014 WCC Coach of the Year at USF.

Walters was selected with the 16th pick of the 1993 NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets. He spent seven seasons in the league playing with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat.

Walters takes over for Otis Smith, who joined the staff in Detroit after two seasons at the helm of the Drive.

Walters also had a minor role in the 1993 movie, Blue Chips.
