Ian Rice‘s first-inning two-run home run proved to be the difference as the Cubs swept the shortened doubleheader(making up the April 10th rainout in game two), ended the Whitecaps’ 10-game winning streak and moved into a first-place tie atop the Eastern division.
Fernando Perez pitched well, giving up two runs(one earned) and three hits over five innings while striking out five.
Jose Azocar singled and scored in the fifth for West Michigan (32-21). Azocar’s 12-game hitting streak ended in game one of the night.
Sandy Baez (2-5, 3.32) gets the start Sunday for West Michigan when these two teams take the field at 2:05 p.m. EST.
