Stars end 10-game losing streak to Griffins with 4-3 win

The Texas Stars finally got their act together and defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 4-3 at Van Andel Arena on Friday.

After building a 3-1 lead, the Griffins (9-5-0-0) gave up three goals in the last 23 minutes of play and saw their season-high four-game winning streak end.

Jason Dickinson “scored” for the Stars (8-6-1-0) at 4:56 into the opening period when he flung a shot from nearly 150-feet that took an awkward bounce off the boards toward Griffins goalie Jared Coreau, whose attempted poke-check ricocheted into the net behind him.

At 9:58 of the first, Grand Rapids continued their five-game power-play goal streak when Tomas Nosek redirected a Ben Street shot past Max Lagace to tie the game. Matt Lorito, who scored three points on the night, also assisted on the goal.

In the second period, Lorito was gifted a goal with a return assist from Nosek during a 5-on-3 power-play at 7:18. Lorito again was the set-up man as he found Martin Frk for a one-timer that lit the lamp at 12:46. Unfortunately for the Griffins, Gemel Smith put a shot past Coreau at 17:44 to bring the Stars back to within 3-2 at the second intermission.

photoAfter the break, the Stars’ Travis Morin shimmied his way down the ice and wristed a shot past Coreau and inside the post at 7:16 to tie the game. But, it was Matej Stransky’s goal that would end the Stars 10-game losing streak to the Griffins. In the slot, Stransky found the puck on his stick and secure the comeback win with a goal high in the pipes at 17:20.

Three Stars:

  1. TEX Stransky (game-winning goal)
  2. GR Lorito (power play goal, two assists)
  3. TEX Dickinson (goal, assist)

The Griffins are back in action Wednesday, visiting the Milwaukee Admirals at 8 p.m. EST.
