The West Michigan Whitecaps got out to an early lead behind their red-hot bats and then had to hold on late as they beat the Great Lakes Loons 6-3 Thursday night at Dow Diamond in Midland, MI.
Will Maddox doubled home David Gonzalez and Jose Azocar brought Maddox back to the dugout in the first as West Michigan took a 2-0 lead to start the game.
Gonzalez then hit a three-run home run in the second inning as the ‘Caps took a five-run lead before the Loons chalked up a run in the bottom of the frame to get on the scoreboard. Great Lakes added a run in the sixth and another in the eighth.
The Loons would come to the plate in the ninth down four runs, 6-2, after Gonzalez scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth. The Loons would score a run and then load the bases with two outs before the ‘Caps sealed the win.
Trent Szkutnik (2-0) gave up two runs and six hits in seven innings while striking out a career-high nine batters. Drew Smith pitched the eighth, giving up one run. Adenson Verastegui took over for the ninth inning and got the save(2).
The Whitecaps (31-19) now head off to South Bend, IN for a weekend series with the South Bend Cubs.
