Top 12 of 2016: #12 – Griffins start season with second straight win

The Grand Rapids Griffins have started the season with two wins for the fifth time in franchise history by sweeping their home-and-home series against the Chicago Wolves with a 4-2 victory on Saturday at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL.

Anthony Mantha beat Wolves goalie Ville Husso on a breakaway 14:32 into the opening period. Robbie Russo made it a two-goal advantage during a 5-on-3 power play with 14.5 seconds left in the first off of Mitch Callahan’s Magic Johnson-like, backhand feed.
Matt Lorito continued his point streak for a 3-0 lead 8:05 into the middle frame. Joe Hicketts’ wrist shot deflected off Lorito in the slot that fell into the net for his first goal in a Grand Rapids uniform. Lorito recorded an assist in his Griffins debut Friday.
Chicago’s Vince Dunn scored two points in the second period. Netting a goal and assisting on a Brad Hunt scor to cut the Griffins lead to 4-2.
Evgeny Svechnikov scored his first professional goal, driving the last side and banking a pass in off Husso, as GR regained a two-goal advantage with 4:09 remaining.

Grand Rapids finished 1-for-6 on the power play. Jared Coreau stopped 23 of 25 shots, earning his second win in as many nights. Eric Tangradi played in his 300th AHL game.

Three Stars:
1. GR Mantha (goal)
2. GR Coreau (W, 23 saves)
3. CHI Dunn (goal, assist)
The Griffins stay on the road, visiting the Iowa Wild at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT.
